blind corner

A walled city outside of Libon, Portugal. We were on out way to Fatama.

sacred

The cathedral in Fatima, I was not impressed. The only god I saw was in the money that exchanged hands as people bought and sold trinkets. The only real symbol of God was cut down to make way for a shrine. The tree that was cut down was the one the Virgin Mary appeared in. In the place of this living thing they placed a modern shrine and a statue of Mary.

God was not home.

Be nice I'm learning Photoshop. In case you can't figure it out, I added the moon and the candles.

Don't ask me where I took this. All I know is that it is somewhere in Lisbon, Portugal. and was very pretty. The weather was actually VERY cold.

empty

This is one of my favorite images I took in Lisbon last winter. I wish I could remember the details and actual location. The sad this is that I took this with a simple Canon Power Shot 150. I wonder what it would have looked like if I had used a real camera.

mark

This is mark, it is through him that I met Todd. Mark's father worked with my uncle at Pratt-Whitney before they all but shut down the Palm Beach County campus. Mark and Todd went to school together and had been best buds since grade school.

cord wood

Sometimes I'm more comfortable taking pictures of things. I don't know if I could ever be a studio photographer. The whole telling someone how to stand, smile, turn... Just not my style.

thinking

Todd was always deep in thought when left alone. He and his father never really got along then. He lived with Mark for awhile.

Where are you now Todd?

I am up and running, Photoshop is installed, my negative scanner is running full force, and I have lost time to make up. This is a rework of something I put out earlier. I was able to undo some of the damage, bring out Todd's face, and made it a duotone to hide the rest of the problems from poor storage. That won't happen again!

This is the best I could do for now, I have hours of work left. I am going to need to invest in a better pointing device f I want to get the details I need.

there goes another $300...

Todd this photograph captures you. I have always loved this shot of you, I miss you and wonder how you and Chie have done. Did you grow old and fat like me? Do you still skydive, surf, or dive? Do you have children? Are you still married? Do you look back on the times we shared and smile?

salute

The summer of 1982 going into my senior year, I didn't know it at the time but I had the biggest crush on these guys, I wanted to be like them so much. Todd giving a salute lives in Japan last I heard and Mark to the far left I've lost touch with about 20 years ago. Bert joined the Coast Guard out of high school. This was taken about 20 feet below. They are in a pine that we jumped out of into a canal. Sugar Loaf Key, Florida

Looking back this was the best summer of my life. I was accepted by these guys for being me, I wasn't the football jock, or a surfer, I was Jamey the photographer and they loved to let me take pictures of them.

I miss them.

i am so happy and a little sad

I got my scanner today so you will see a lot of post that look a little dated in the clothes we are wearing. These go back to a time between 1980 and 1984 when I was a budding photographer. I forgot about some of the shot I took of my friends. The most memorable ones are from the summer between my junior and senior year of high school, 1982.

I sat and cried as I looked at what time had done to me and my negatives. I will never forgive myself for turning my back on photography for so long and letting all this film become damaged. Hopefully I will be able to undo some once I run things through Photo Shop.

Hopefully I will get this all sorted out by the end of the weekend. Then I will become a posting fool. Keep checking back and please leave me comments! Let me know what you think, even it you want to tell me it's crap or you think on of my subjects are a hot and you what a number!

vision

I agree the title is goofy but it looks like two golden eyes, but the shot is off, the composition is wrong. I really hate this one. It don't think it will last long here.

Posted by Hello

golden

This really is a trash shot but the color is warm and the lines comfort me, so I kept it. What do you think?

I don't know what is was about these but I like the way they looked on the screen when I took them, so warm.

These were taken at my friend John's house. I think it was new year's eve and we were on our way to a party. Don't ask me why but he like to have candles lit when company comes over.

lightness & darkness

This is something I took when I got my first digital ( 2.0 MP Canon Elph). I had a lot of fun with it and it still takes great images, just the images size is a little limiting. I'm going to get a real dSLR soon. I want to move up from the 35 mm.

Posted by Hello

sleeping beauty reduex

I posted the B&W of this on May 12. The reason being that I thought the colors were off and going to grey scale would hide a lot of those problems. With the help of PhotoShop and a computer removed form the rest of the house I was able to tweak it a little. See the caption from May 12 for my feeling about posting this one.

Posted by Hello

bench

A rework of the color image I posted eerier. Everyone seems to think the color one was lonely so I upped it a bit by making it darker and in gray scale. (B&W for us old school 35 mm users). I think I want to burn out the background a little more. It's still a work in progress.

My first post after the crash. Just some random stuff I am working on, mostly taken around the neighborhood. These where taken in my back yard on afternoon after work. I see some things still that I want to fix, maybe saturate the pinks a little.

Up and running - well almost

I have everything, but one important program back on my computer. Of course that one program would be the most important, Photoshop! Every time I go to install I get an error message the a component of Photoshop is currently running. I can't figure it out.

I also haven't had the time to go out and shoot any now stuff. I am coming into he end of the school year and this is a very crazy time for us high school teachers. Senior grades to get in, graduation, good byes, exams to write and grade. On top of all that I am transferring to a new school that will open in the fall. I've only been at my current assignment for four years and teaching for eight but it is amazing how much STUFF you can accumulate in that time; we science teachers are the worst at this.

the crash day two

okay, almost everything is back in order. I only lost about two weeks worth of work from the computer. i'm hoping the money i dumped into the system yesterday will save my work in the event that i have another system meltdown. got myself on of those nifty external hard drives with a one button back up feature. i did my first back-up right after everything was setup and it took over two hours to do! i'm hoping it was because it was the first time and that the next time it will be quicker

i still need to install photoshop and illustrator and rearrange files back into a more logical order. i also need to come up with a labeling system for my images. anyone have any ideas?

for what it's worth i've had a real bad experience ordering from Abe's of Maine, www.abesofmaine.com, stay away from them. very unprofessional.

The horror of a crash

I had another computer crash yesterday. So what is posted here is all that is left of some of my work. I really wish that I could afford to switch over to a Mac system.

two surfer, well four actually

This was something I took with my 2 Mp Canon Powershot. It was a really good camera when it came out and still takes good pictures as long as you don't want anything larger than a 4"x5". This was taken at a Surf Club BBQ/Fundraiser. They are a good group of kids. Not all surfer are stoners. They are bright intelligent young men and women that care about the environment and protecting the beaches. Some of them are very talented artists others have aspirations to become engineers. It was fun and an honor to be associated with them these past two years. I know that there area few that I will remain in contact with for years to come.

sleeping beauty

I broke a rule and posted a photo that I shouldn't. I own the image, I took it and the subject is an adult. He is self-centered enough to like the thought that someone is looking at an image of him so I am going to leave it, I think. Besides could you really tell who it is?

I've tried my hand at action photography/sports photography. I wanted to post more but this is of a high school team and I don't want any problems with what I put out. People can be kinda freaky about things like this.

matt smirk

I know Matt wants to pose for me, he's that vain and self centered. But I don't know if he will like how I want to pose him. He wants to do the GQ clothing model thing. I was thinking more the A&F jeans and no shirt thing. But what does he expect, my photography heroes are Bruce Webber and Larry Clark.

What can a say, it's cliche, it's not level, it lacks a full range of tones. IT IS CRAP! Why do I post this when I know it is no go? I know better, my photography teacher from high school must be turning in her grave. I should try and find her...

This was taken in Howard Park in West Palm Beach FL. There are a lot o banyan trees that have wonderful trunks. They have depth and texture. I think I'm going to take a day and do a photo study of them. Photograph them different times of the day to see the changing light.

Memphis in Bed

This is my oldest, Memphis. She is about 11 years old and I've had her since se was about 25 months. She is so loyal, she never leaves my side. I can even keep her from chasing cats with a cimple voice command!

I think she likes having her picture takes.

Rocks - Portugal, Winter - 2005

I don't know I liked the shot, it's stupid but whatever. Again can you guess 3x5, blah blah blah
Time for bed.

On the Shore, Portugal, Winter - 2005

All the things I could photograph and this was the best I could do, sad isn't it. Well there was no one doing anything or looking good, it was cold, and windy. So this was the best I could do. I could have walked sown to the ocean and taken pictures of the waves but there were no sufers so again it would have been another blah shot. This also is a scan of a 3x5 print that was run through Photoshop.

This Caught my Eye

Small Town in Portugal, Winter 2004
This was a shot taken the same day as my trip to Fatima. Again I was using a Canon point and shoot so I had no real control of the exposure. It is also a scan of a 3x5 print that has been run through Photoshop to fix the problems.

Posted by Hello

Two Ladies in Fatima - Portugal

I was really disappointed with Fatima in terms of the spiritual experience. I was not expecting something so commercial. And devoid of any sign of God. The tree in which Mary appeared was removed and a shrine erected in it's place. This shrine is surrounded by acres of asphalt. There are barricades everywhere and monks rushing about trying to avoid the public gathered to bask in God's presence. It was a disappointment to say the least.

This is the one good artistic shot that I got. This is a scan from a 3"x5" print. I then ran it through Adobe Photoshop to fix some of the scanner and exposure problems. I didn't take my SLR on this trip I was using my Canon point and shoot. I am hoping that my negative scanner will show up this week. I will rescan the negative and see what I can make of it.

Luxor Reads the Sunday Paper

My dogs are the most often photographed subject. They are always around and I don't have to worry about the legality of posting images of them. Not only are grayhounds great photo subjects with expressive faces they are loyal pets. Most are gentle around children and can be trained to not chase the cat. Between 30,000 and 40,00 are"retired"( killed) every year when they are not able to perform as well as the owner wants. Some dogs are as young as 18 months and are very healthy, they just don't run as fast as the rest of the dogs. Others have outlived their racing and breeding careers and are not profitable to the kennel.

A New Start

I want this to be a space to showcase some of my better work. I have another blog www.madkhemist.blospot.com that I started as a place to rant about being a teacher. I thought that it was unprofession to have these two parts of my life put in one place. Please enjoy what I post, leave comments, I can take it.

Enough for today

This is enough for today. I have taken the day off to enjoy life and the beauty of Sunny Palm Beach County. While the rest of the country is still shaking off the remains of winter I am enjoying some wonderful weather. I think this calls for some time by the pool and then maybe a trip around town, I'm feeling "clicky" today.

I had a hard time with the roll of film this shot came from. I think it was film left over from a trip I took a year or so ago. I had to do a lot of Photoshopping on this one to get it to look presentable. It still not the best I have ever taken, but it does capture the feeling of the game.

Jeffrey Swims

This is Jeffrey, He attends an inner city school in South Florida. His special education teacher, who is also my neighbor, brought him over one day to swim in the pool. I saw the wonderful patterns his body made as he moved under the water. We had to drag him out of the pool after about an hour, otherwise I think he would still be in it.
